Foster Care and Adoption

What I appreciate about The Up Center is that they didn’t just train us and disappear. They checked in after the first night, after hard days, and when things felt like too much. It’s still challenging, but we don’t feel like we’re doing this alone anymore.

We went into foster care thinking we were prepared. We weren’t. The emotional weight, the uncertainty, the constant learning, it all hits harder than you expect. they didn’t romanticize any part of the process, and I’m grateful for that. What helped the most was having people who didn’t just explain policies, but talked openly about the emotional reality of fostering attachment, loss, boundaries, and patience. There were moments when we questioned ourselves, and having steady, grounded support made those moments manageable. This program didn’t make things easy, but it made them clearer. And sometimes clarity is exactly what you need to keep going.

My husband and I always thought fostering meant caring for little kids, but during the info session at The Up Center we learned about teens who need stable homes too. Honestly, that shifted our whole mindset. We started attending their trainings, and what impressed me was how practical everything was how to communicate with older youth, how to give them space while still showing up, how to build trust without pushing. We’re in the final steps of approval now, and instead of feeling terrified, we feel prepared. If anyone here has experience fostering teens, did anything surprise you in the first few weeks?
